| Joss the slayer is back--and he wants Vlad dead. But Vlad is sixteen, full of angst, and doesn't care because he's had to break up with his girlfriend, Meredith. Not much has changed thematically in this fourth installment, making the book seem a little redundant at times, but the action is fast and the ending packs a killer punch. | As half vampire/half human teen Vladimir Tod's junior year of high school looms, he faces threats and concerns on all fronts. His uncle and mentor, Otis, is on trial for breaking vampiric law, transgressions that may well cost him his life. A mysterious and powerful vampire has come to town to assist in the trial, bringing with him an intense taste for exotic vampire blood—and Vlad's is the most exotic of all. A former friend turned vampire slayer has returned to town obsessed with killing Vlad. In addition to his status a vampire, Vlad is still an eleventh grade boy and that fact is not forgotten. His inner turmoil over two girls who have captured his heart in very different ways takes center stage, as well as the conflict with his best friend. The penultimate book in The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod is the series' darkest entry yet. There is enough back story provided for readers to begin with this book without being lost, but series fans will learn new aspects involving many familiar characters. With many enthusiastic series readers, libraries serving middle and high school aged youth will likely see this book circulating heavily. It ends with a profoundly unexpected turn of events that changes nearly everything thought to be true through the first few books, setting up the conclusion of the series (coming in fall 2010) in grand fashion.—Sherrie Williams 4Q 4P M J S Copyright 2010 Voya Reviews. | | |
